There’s hybrid choral music as it meets art-rock projects in work by New York-based German-born Charlotte Greve, German pianist Martin Kohstedt, and composer Andrew McKenna Lee.
Listen to portions of a long form suite by German-born, Brooklyn-based composer, singer, and saxophonist Charlotte Greve (Wood River, Asterids, The Choir Invisible.) The very genre-fluid work Sediments We Move, features her band Wood River and the Berlin choir Cantus Domus, and might be described as composed art rock with prog leanings, as spun from connections within the mind of the jazz and indie-pop saxophonist. Greve says, “All my influences are here” and one can hear the combination of choral music, rock, noise, free jazz, metal, ambient, and bombastic 80s-inspired pop, all melted together for a new music alloy. Also, there’s more music from Cantus Domus, (“the classical choir secretly in love with pop music”), from a collaboration with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.
Then, hear music featuring a small chorus in the composed art rock with prog seasoning by guitarist Andrew McKenna Lee as performed by The Knells. Plus, recombinant parts of connected musical ideas in a collaborative work by pianist Martin Kohlstedt and the Gewandhaus Chor. - Caryn Havlik
